Bad Breath From a Low Carb Diet
One of the most common causes of bad breath is from a low
carb diet. This is because when you're dieting hard and
actually losing weight, the body starts expelling toxins
through your tongue and breath. So your breath smells really
foul, your tongue gets furry as your body excretes all kinds of
unwanted junk through the pores.
The same thing happens with your skin. It sweats out
many of the toxins that got into your body from your
everyday food and drink, and even from some of the medicines
and prescribed medications you have taken over the years.
That's why health specialists talk about having a cleansing
detox while you are fasting or on are on a weight
loss regimen such as a low carb diet.
Rapid weight loss from a low carb diet induces a state
of ketosis, where your body thinks it is being starved and so
it starts to burn off fat and even muscle sometimes, just to
keep you alive. It's a natural survival mechanism, just as it
is natural for anyone in ketosis to have headaches, feel
lethargic and have awful-smelling breath and body odor.
The good news is that this cleansing detox period will
eventually pass, and if you follow the instructions of
your dietician or other health professional, you will end
up feeling better and looking much trimmer in a few weeks
time.
So, having bad breath from a low carb diet is a temporary
problem, and not a serious one. It only occurs while you
are on your low carbohydrate diet, and only during the
most stringent weight-loss phase. You can cover up your
bad breath by using breath spray or eating peppermints; and you
can use body deodorant to mask the natural odors while you
detox.
As long as your low carb weight loss diet is a
reasonable one and you are generally healthy, then there
shouldn't be any health issues you need to worry about. Just
check with your family doctor, to be absolutely sure.
